2013, What A Year

So, here it is, the end of 2013 is upon us. It only feels like yesterday I was in my parents house getting ready to ring in this year, I can't quite believe it's gone by so fast!
We started this year with a lot of "big" things to do, most importantly, have a baby, but on top of that we had to find somewhere to live together, buy a suitable car (I was a bit of a girl racer previously!) and just prepare ourselves as best we could for the huge change that was coming our way!
While I am a natural worrier, there were plenty of days where I really didn't think we'd pull all of this off, but I needn't have worried. As my oh so patient other half told me, things will fall into place...and that they did.
We found a newer car in February, much more suitable to transport a baby around in, we moved into our first home together in April and of course we welcomed our wonderful little boy, Luke into the world in June. Not forgetting, we became engaged in August when James and Luke planned a surprise proposal :)
Of course like every year there's been some lows, but the high times far out weigh them. I've seen my closest friends taking the next steps in their lives, new babies have arrived to join Luke in the 2013 gang, I've met some wonderful new people who I just know will be around for a long time and most importantly, I've changed. I guess becoming a parent does that, but I've realised the more important things in life, I'm trying my hardest not to fret over the small things anymore  and to focus on the bigger picture, but most of all my drive has kicked up a notch. I've got a more determined feeling within me, to really go after my dreams and goals, pursue happiness so that I can set a good example for our little boy and to make him proud.
2013 was great but I have a feeling 2014 is going to be even better :)

Happy New Year everyone! I really hope all of your dreams for this coming year come true. Peace, love, light and positive vibes to you all xo

6 Months Old

I'm somewhat shocked that we have reached 6 months, I can't seem to get my head around the fact that my boy is 6 months! I mean that's not a teeny tiny baby age anymore, he's more of grown up baby if you know what I mean!
The 5th month was a good one for Luke, he seemed to really come into his own personality and the chatter has kicked up a notch, along with the blowing bubbles, this entertains me and him for ages. He's so much more aware of his surroundings now, he recognises voices and really wants to touch and feel everything. He's sitting up unaided most of the time now, of course we keep a close eye on him as he can still fall backwards or sideways but he has his own play area surrounded by cushions. This is another thing thats amazed me the last few days, he happily plays on his play mat with all his toys by himself for ages, I sit behind him, not distracting him, just watching him interacting with all the different toys. He's trying to hold the bottle himself now, he can for a while but then lets it drop. He's mad to grab the spoon as you feed him too but can satisfy him for now by giving it to him afterwards.
The little monster has been in 6-9 months clothes the last 3 weeks, he's very long so all baby grows were getting too small.
He's dropped to 6oz bottles now and the solids have increased. His favourite at the moment is chicken and vegetables and fruit custard for dessert. He always has a bit of bedtime porridge before bed too just keep him that bit fuller going to sleep. He's still taking a middle of the night bottle but this will phase out soon.
He's still a bit of a divil during the night, he's been a bit unsettled the last few nights but then again he is still teething mad. He comes into us about 5am or 6am in the morning until about 8am. Saying that he went to his Nanny's for a sleepover last Saturday and slept 6 hours straight, had a bottle and back off for another 4 or 5 hours, he likes to keep his Mum and Dad on our toes I'd say!
He had his 6 month jabs today, I definitely react worse than he does, I dread them the whole night before and feel guilty for him for ages afterwards. He screamed for about 30 seconds and then that was it, he had a sleep for 1 1/2 hours then.
He is such a good little boy, he melts my heart every time he laughs, especially when he's being tickled, his lovely little smile can brighten up the darkest of moods and he always seems to know the right time to do it too! Each day he's becoming so much more independent, wanting to do things by himself, his way. This is great of course but sometimes I wish I could just freeze us in time for a while. I'm am so so proud of him though and each day I am more excited to see the little boy he's becoming.
I'm really looking forward to enjoying his 6th month, I have a feeling he's going to be keeping us all entertained over the festive holidays :) xo

Fingers are ALWAYS in his mouth! :)

Raspberry and Vanilla Christmas Fairy Cakes

So that time of year again and I have to make my usual Christmassy fairy cakes :)

Using my ever so reliable cake recipe, here they are:

Ingredients:

6oz Self Raising Flour
6oz Caster Sugar
6oz Margarine
3 Eggs
Vanilla Essence

Icing:

Margarine
Icing Sugar
Red Food Colouring
Raspberry Essence

Method:

  • Mix caster sugar and margarine together first
  • Add flour a bit at a time and an egg one at a time. I find this gives the mixture a nicer texture than throwing it all in together
  • Leave to mix in the food mixer for a few minutes
  • Add in 1tsp of vanilla essence
  • Bake for approx 30 - 35mins on 170degrees in a preheated oven
  • Leave to cool on a cooling rack

For the icing I don't measure the margarine or icing sugar I just go with it until I get the right texture so make it how stiff or runny you would like the mixture. I added the raspberry essence to the icing. I then decorated with some Christmas sugar cake decorations.
There you go, so quick and easy and and and ideal recipe to use with small children, they have great fun decorating the cakes with the different coloured icing :)

Christmas Card Photo's 2013

So I have finally managed to get some Christmas photo's of Luke done, just in time to get them printed tomorrow to insert into the Christmas cards we are giving to family.

I took them myself on my SLR camera, a Canon EOS 1100D. I bought this camera last year when my photography hobby kicked up a notch. I got most of Luke's Christmas themed clothes from Tesco and purchased the fleece Winter themed blanket from Penneys. It made the perfect back drop for our pictures. I just draped it over our couch and sat the little man down. He was only too happy to pose for the first few but got bored of Mum's constant snapping after a short while.
I edited them using iPhoto and PicMonkey which allowed me to add in some themed extras.

What do you think? :)
