Me & Mine May

We are back this month with our Me & Mine contribution. We  missed out again last month, would you believe we were 3 or 4 days into May before we got a chance to grab a picture and that stage I just thought it was too late so made a conscious effort to be more prepared for May and I am, yay!

Life has been busy busy busy here these last 2 months. The OH finished his studies for this term and I began mine. I'm currently doing a night course in special needs assisting and am thoroughly enjoying it and learning something new. There are a couple of assignments due but so far I am managing it ok. I'm also back to work 5 days a week for the next few months so it is full on right now but I seem to thrive the more I have to do, anyone else like that?!

With me being out of the house more at the moment, the OH and I have done a bit of role reversal so he's looking after things at home and works mostly in the evenings, our days off are opposite so we rarely get to see each other but it's all good, my course will be finished soon and we'll will have a bit of our time together back. We just try to make the most of time off we have together. The weekends literally whizz by, 2 days to catch up on family time is just not enough!

Luke had an open day today at the centre he attends playgroup and he met his teachers and saw the room he'll in next year when he begins junior preschool, I can't believe he'll be in preschool this September, where has my baby gone?!

Life is so busy right I can't even think of anything specific to focus on because all the days blend into each other! So I'll just crack on with our pictures, we took these sunny selfies the other day at a park while we were enjoying the glorious sunshine that has finally decided to pay us a visit over here!

Here we are in May:

This month Luke loves:
  • Dinosaurs, everything to do with them
  • Playing out in the back garden
  • Taking selfies on Snapchat with all the funny filters
This month Dad loves:
  • Finishing this year of college
  • Luke watching him play a football match
  • Playing Power Rangers with Luke
This month Mum loves:
  • Learning something new
  • Getting out for a walk in the evening sunshine
  • Having full blown conversations with Luke, he's such a chatter box

Sounds Of Summer

According to the weather experts we are in for a fairly decent Summer during the months of June and July, much like the one of 2013 apparently, I wasn't a fan of that Summer - a newborn in a heatwave was tough going. However we would be only delighted with it this year!

So I've compiled a short list of songs that remind me of Summer or songs that I just love to blare on a sunny day:

Rory Gallagher - Bad Penny

Ah I just love this song! Sunroof open, windows down and this would be blasting out of the car on the way to work. I think I connect it with Summer because myself and my bestie went to see a Rory Gallagher tribute band in the no longer An Cruiscin Lan in Cork city years ago, I particularly love this live version from the Stage Struck album.

Ace of Base - Life Is A Flower

"Carry on smiling and the world will smile.....life is a flooower" sure doesn't this have Summer written all over it and with all the sunflowers in the video, I love singing along to this.

Jimmy Eat World - Sweetness

Just take it as a given that any song list I ever have will include a JEW song! Summer holidays spent with Kerrang! on top volume at home, all the windows at home so we could hear it in the garden and this would come on "Are you listening woah oh oh oh", love it!

Delerium - Silence

This song dominated the charts in my mid teens, would come on at all the discos and when you were down town of an afternoon almost every boy/girl racer car had it blaring, I was always mad jealous and couldn't wait until I was old enough to cruise around in my car blasting my music.

Nalin & Kane - Beachball

Of course by the time I got around to having my own car this song was a huge hit and yes I was one of those girl racers in my civic cruising through the town with this on repeat, ah good times.

Fleetwood Mac - Go Your Own Way

The parents are fans of Fleetwood Mac and the mother often has the the radio / cd player on while shes doing the housework, there was many a time I was woken form my teenage slumber during the Summer holidays by a bit of Fleetwood Mac...or whatever else she had on.

Bryan Adams - Summer of 69

Well it does have "Summer" in the title! We came on holidays to Cobh in August 1992, I was 6 (we loved it so much we moved there!) and this song was always on the jukebox and I always associate it with Summer ever since, fond memories of a very significant holiday.

Cascada - Everytime We Touch

Ah this song was on repeat for the Summer of 2005. My first Summer working away form home and making some lifelong friends. I made friends with a girl I worked with and we are still good friends now and this will always be our song.

I could go on forever with any kind of song lists really but these are just a few that came to mind.
What are your songs of the Summer? I'd love to hear your suggestions :)

Cot Days Are Over

After almost 3 years, we did it, made the transition from cot to bed. I'm not going to lie, I was dreading it! I envisaged many nights where he would be getting up and walking about or even earlier morning wake up calls now that he could come and go as he pleased but surprisingly he's done neither.

I don't think he realises that he can actually get out of the bed if he wants because he is still calling us from his bed when he wants to get up, like this morning, "Muuuuuum, Muuuuuum" so in I went and there he was lying down, relaxing until I came in to get him.

Going to bed is no different either, he still wants his cuddle on the chair in his room first, these days he's not napping during the day so he's asleep in my arms within minutes and then I put him into bed, he shuffles into position and off he goes. We had a couple of nights where he wouldn't settle as usual, he would sit up straight away and starting roaring for me to come back, I thought he'd definitely get up out of bed then but no just sat up and had an extra cuddle.

He seems to be sleeping a lot better too, I'm not sure if it's more room, knowing he's not confined, the mattress is newer, I don't know but it's helping.
He asked for his cot once on the first night but is now more than happy with his bed.

We did a few a things to help him look forward to the change rather than just landing it on him and I think it all helped make it easier:

  • Ordered his bed linen online where he saw the picture of the design and eagerly awaited it's arrival in the post, he was quite excited when it arrived and wanted to use it straight away.
  • I actually picked up his bed for a steal in a local charity shop one day when my mam saw it when she was dropping stuff off. It was in perfect condition so couldn't say no, we just stored it until we needed it. It was a dark blue colour so we both spent a couple of weekends painting ti white, he had his little paint brush too.
  • Kept it in the same position in the room as his cot was so that it wasn't too different.
  • We added some new pictures and lampshade
  • Talked about it the week beforehand saying that we would swap him on a Friday after school and then when he came he would have a surprise of his new bed in his room - his response when he saw his new bed all made up and in position, "It's so cute, I love it!"
They were only a few small things but all mounted to him being excited about the transition rather than fighting it and it's working well so far, fingers crossed..oh god I'm going to jinx us now aren't I?!!
